Tank with colonnades at Banashankari

Bagalkot, Badami
Temples / Bastis

This tank, roughly measuring 320 ft. square right in front of Banashankari temple, is a huge water tank with pillared colonnade running on all its sides except west where a pillared pavilion is located just opposite the main entrance to Banashankari shrine. The pillared pavilion consists of 24 pillars without any sculptural ornamentation. They have a square section at the base, a fluted octagonal shaft bound by a broad fillet in the centra surmounted by another part again square in section over which rises the short kalasa with the kani mouldings above it. The brackets are almost non-descript, with slightly chamfered sides. The whole complex appears to belong to post–Yadava period, based on architectural style.
