ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA

Dharwad Circle, with its head quarters at Dharwad, started functioning from 1st November 1996, after reorganization of the Bangalore and Hyderabad circles. It has a total of 282 Centrally Protected Monuments under its jurisdiction. At present, there are seven (07) Districts under the jurisdiction of Dharwad Circle and nine (09) Sub-Circle offices situated in these Districts for effective administration, maintenance, to undertake Special Repairs to the Monuments and to keep a watch on encroachments.

Dharwad circle has a variety of sites like Pre and Proto-historic sites, huge megaliths and a number of monuments such as Temples, Basadis, Mosques, Tombs, Forts, Caves and innumerable Pillar and Slab Inscriptions. The magnificent group of temples at Pattadakal have been enlisted in the World Heritage list. Dharwad Circle caters to the conservation, preservation and maintenance of centrally protected monuments in Karnataka.
