Lakulisa temple immediately behind the Bhutnath group, containing a nude seated image in the shrine, broken across the body

Bagalkot, Badami
Temples / Bastis

The temple can be attributed to Circa 11th -12th century CE on stylistic grounds. This temple, is situated to the north-west corner of the Bhutanatha group and is noteworthy on account of an interesting nude image of Lakulisa set in the shrine and thus being the principal object of worship. The image has two hands of which the left which was resting on the thigh is damaged, the right, bent at elbow, holds what looks like the end of a staff. The temple faces south and consists of a sabhamandapa supported by four pillars and a shrine with an antarala. Images of Mahishasuramardini, Ganapati and Vishnu are carved on the surface of the inner wall of the circumambulatory passage. Two courses of a damaged stepped pyramid type shikhara are seen over the shrine.
