Monolithic stone pillar bearing

Engraved on an pillar set up in front of the Mallikarjuna temple at Pattadakal, this inscription is in the Siddhamatrika and Kannada – Telugu of the 8th century CE. It opens with invocations to Siva and Hara-Gauri andrefers to the setting up of a trisula – pillar (trisular – mudrankitasaila – stambha) by Jananasivacharya who had come from Mrigathanikaharavishaya on the northern bank of the Ganga river and was staying in the Vijayesvara temple (modern Sangamesvara).This pillar was set up to the south of Vijayesvara temple built by VijayadityaSatyasraya, to the north of Lokesvara temple built by Lokamata (i.e. Lokamahadevi), who was the queen of VikramadityaSatyasraya.A grant of 30 nivarttans of land near village Arapunase was made by Jnanasivacharya for the Vijayesvara temples worship after having bought that land from Aryabhatta who had received it from Vijayaditya. Apparently belongs to the reign of Kirttivarma- II (744-756 CE).
