Inscriptions on two pillars in the above temple

Belagavi
Inscription

1) This is an inscription on the eastern face of the south-western column of the four central columns in the outer mandapa of the Panchalingesvara temple. The face of the column is 9½ inch high and 1ft 5½ inch wide; the whole of it is covered by the writing, which runs over the margin to about an inch round it. There are no sculptures. The character is good Kanarese with letters of about ⅝ inch high. The language is old Kanarese, mostly verse. The purport of the inscription is to record the construction of the column by the Shaiva divine Nagarasi, a disciple of Jana Shakti and to laud their Merits.

2) This is an inscription on the eastern face of the column to the south of the column which contains inscription No. 1 (above descibed). The inscribed face is 1ft 2½ inch high and 1ft 5 inch wide. It has no sculptures. The character is good Kanarese, with letters about ⅝ inch high. The language is Kanarese, the verse being in the older dialect and the prose medieval. The object is to record that the column was presented by Madi-Gauda son of Bachi-Setti and lay disciple of the Nagarasi mentioned in inscription No. 1 and to sing the praise of Madi and his master.
