The temple of Ladkhan

Bagalkot, Aihole
Temples / Bastis

Datable to the 7th-8th century CE, this temple is divided into a square pillared hall and a rectangular pillared porch. A sanctum is built against the back wall of hall. Above the central ceiling of the hall is a second smaller sanctuary with images carved on the outer walls. The hall has sixteen pillars in all, standing in four rows, each row having four pillars. Thus, the hall is divided into a central nave and four side aisles, two on each side. The hall is roofed with sloping slabs arranged in two tiers and its interior is lit with pierced stone screens on three sides. The porch columns have decorative reliefs, and those at the entrance are carved with river goddesses (Ganga and Yamuna) and couples beneath trees. Pots and other auspicious motifs appear on the balcony (Kakshasana) slabs.
