Our Welcome to Archaeological Survey of India
Dharwad Circle, with its head quarters at Dharwad, started functioning from 1st November 1996, after reorganization of the Bangalore and Hyderabad circles. It has a total of 298 Centrally Protected Monuments under its jurisdiction. Of these 16 monuments are situated in the Districts of Bidar, Gulbarga, and Raichur (transferred from the Hyderabad Circle) and the remaining 282 from the Districts of Bijapur, Belgaum, Dharwad and North Kanara alienated from Bangalore Circle. In all, now there are twelve Districts under the jurisdiction of Dharwad Circle. It has 11 Sub-Circle offices situated in these Districts for effective administration, maintenance, to undertake Special Repairs to the Monuments and to keep a watch on encroachments. After the formation of this Circle, four temples at Halshi in Belgaum District and one excavated Mahastupa at Kanaganahalli, District Gulbarga are protected by the Survey.
The Dharwad circle has a variety of sites like Pre and Proto- historic sites, huge megaliths and a number of monuments such as temples, Basadis Mosques, Tombs, Forts, Caves and innumerable Pillar and Slab Inscriptions. The magnificent group of temples at Pattadakal have been enlisted in the World Heritage list. Dharwad Circle caters to the conservation, preservation and maintenance of centrally protected monuments in Karnataka.
