Inscriptions in Madhukeshwar Temple

Inscription

Many stone slabs containing inscriptions are preserved in Madhukesvara temple. The first record is engraved on three faces of a pillar in the Madhukesvara temple of King Harihara of the Vijayanagara Dynasty. It is dated to 1387 CE belongs to Rayas of Vijayanagar.  The inscriptions seems to record a gift of land to some deity whose name is lost. The donor of the grant seems to have been the governor of Gove. The king is stated to be ruling from Hastinapuri. The writings on the second and third faces have been worn off. The second inscription is on the pillar of Madhukeshvara temple. In characters of about the 13th – 14th century CE, this record states that VibhutiGauraya, disciple of Panditaradhya of Oruganti, seeks refuge in god.  Another inscription is on another pillar of Madhukesvara temple. This record, in characters of about the 14th century CE, registers a gift to Uikkideva of Kadamba Kula, a pupil of Lakulesvaradeva for the benefit of the temple. Another record is in characters of about the 15th – 16th century CE, gives the names of Bhutanatha, Yogisvara, Vodeya, Sadsiva, Vodeya, Hiresarvesvara – Vodeya and Channapa Vodeya. The fifth inscription is outside of the wall of Madhukesvara shrine in Madhukesvara temple. It refers to the family of the former Vodeyas of Banavase – sathala.  It is in characters of about the 16th century CE.
One more inscription of Madhukesvara temple mentions the former family of Vadeyas of Banavase – sthala. These are in characters of about the 16th century CE.
