Safa Masjid

Belagavi
Mosque

The Safa Masjid lying inside the fort, is built in typical combination of Mughal and Deccan styles of minars, Domes and arches. The persian inscription to the right of the main entrance dated 1516 CE records the construction of this mosque by one Asad Khan. It has two minars in the front with huge wooden doors decorated wtih profuse carvings depicting floral as well as vegetative designs. There is a staircase leading to the balcony and to the open terrace. Outside the mosque to the right, is an underground passage believed to lead to Yellurgad. The mosque has three entrances to the Jaina hall with arces having floral and calligraphic designs. Inside the big Jaina hall are circular plastered pillars and two of them have persian inscriptions engraved on already existing inscriptions in kannada language. These pillars were of old hindu temples. The inscription on one of the pillars in the SafaMasjid, dated 1199 CE, belongs to Kartavirya – IV, while the other kannad inscription in Nagari latter dated CE 1261, is of Sevuna Krishna, registering a grant to Brahmin scholars.  The persian inscriptions on the pillars of the Safa Masjid are in 16th century CE characters and contain mainly holy verses from the Quran and in one of them, the author’s name is mentioned as Abu Talib in the Masjid-i-Safa. The persian inscription to the right of the main entrance dated 1518 CE records the date of the laying of the foundation of the mosque by Asad Khan and the verse was compossed by Quadri Nizamud – Dawwani.
