The two- storied jain temple and cave on hill under Meguti

Bagalkot, Aihole
Rock cut caves, Temples / Bastis

Assignable to circa 7th century CE, this two-storeyed Jain temple, facing north, partly excavated and partly structural, consists of two long verandas (28’6” x 6’9”) one above the other, with a façade of four heavy square pillars and two pilasters. The entrance to the lower cave is very beautifully carved and leads to a long hall (25”x7’6”) from which access is gained to three small cells through three door-frames, the central one of which is beautifully ornamented.

In the veranda of the upper floor, on the ceiling in front of the shrine-door, is a small seated human figure with triple umbrella over it, which is variously identified as Jina or Buddha. There are in all five inscriptions, including the one on a boulder to the left side.
